Violet Grohl Covers The Cure's 'High' for Triple J's 'Like A Version'
Violet Grohl covered The Cure's 1992 single "High" for Australian radio station Triple J's "Like A Version" segment, performing the entire song with just a single acoustic guitar. In the same session she also played "595" from her debut album Be Sweet To Me. According to NME, she told interviewers "High" is "one of my favourite Cure songs," adding that she couldn't quite explain why.
A deliberately raw acoustic take
"High" appears on The Cure's ninth studio album, Wish. Discussing the arrangement, Grohl praised the original's instrumentation as "so beautifully The Cure," calling it a perfect example of the band's sound in the early 1990s.
She said she loves the "childlike joy" and heavy imagery in the lyrics, describing it as a sweet love song. For her own version, she said she wanted to keep it as raw as possible and lean into the song's teenage-crush kind of feeling.
Grohl recalled getting pulled into The Cure's catalog around age 12 or 13 after hearing "Friday I'm In Love," quickly working through the band's whole discography and becoming a devoted fan of the group and frontman Robert Smith.
Reading & Leeds debut and family background
Violet Grohl played her first Reading & Leeds Festival appearances last weekend, having previously postponed two UK shows due to illness. NME included her Leeds set among its highlights from the festival.
Earlier this spring, she spoke about being a young woman in the rock scene, saying the best advice she'd received was that it's fine to say no or state you don't want to do something. Her father, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, has previously said in interviews that he had no advance knowledge of his daughter's record deal — he learned about it over a meal — and described himself as having been "completely hands off."
Meanwhile, The Cure recently wrapped their European and UK summer tour, which included a large outdoor show at Manchester's Wythenshawe Park along with festival appearances at Isle of Wight, Primavera Sound Barcelona, and Rock en Seine.
