Nusantara Beat: Amsterdam's Indonesian Psych-Rock Outfit
Amsterdam psych-rock band Nusantara Beat has been drawing attention for a sound built on a genuinely dual heritage: all members are of Indonesian descent, with one hailing from West Java and the rest second- or third-generation members of the Dutch-Indonesian community. The band fuses Indonesian traditional rhythms with the Netherlands' own Nederbeat garage and psychedelic rock tradition. A sound with two lineages
Amsterdam is no stranger to psychedelic rock — the city was a key hub of the continental hippie movement in the 1960s. Shocking Blue, though originally from The Hague, was long active there, and garage-rock pioneers The Outsiders were based directly in Amsterdam. Traces of that Nederbeat scene still persist in the Dutch rock underground today.
But Nederbeat is only half the equation. The Indonesian archipelago carries its own highly diverse musical lineage — chant-like indigenous folk traditions, the Indo-pop legacy represented by Koes Plus, the ska subculture of Malang, and more recently Thee Marloes. Nusantara Beat draws from this lineage, layering traditional rhythms and psychedelic guitar work within the same songs.
Recorded output
The band's self-titled debut album was released by German label Glitterbeat in November 2025. Before that, they had already put out several 7-inch singles through Swiss label Les Disques Bongo Joe. Together, these releases form the entry point for understanding the band's sound.
Live performances
According to Far Out Magazine, Nusantara Beat's real strength is on stage. The band recently toured the UK, with one stop at Green Man Festival. The outlet described the performance as tightly executed — every riff and beat landing with precision — without sacrificing the improvisational feel of a live show.
Guitarist Jordy Sanger's surf-rock-tinged playing supplies much of the band's drive, while vocalist Megan de Klerk's ethereal voice pulls audiences into the psychedelic space the band constructs. The report suggested that, amid a live scene crowded with similar-sounding acts, Nusantara Beat is hard to place alongside a direct comparison.
