Modest Mouse and My Morning Jacket Drop Neil Young Covers Ahead of Tribute LPs
Modest Mouse and My Morning Jacket each released their own Neil Young covers on Friday, September 11, 2026, as part of an ongoing tribute project. The tracks will appear on the second and third volumes of the Heart Of Gold series, which are set for release on Friday, November 6. According to Stereogum, these are the third and fourth covers unveiled from this batch, following earlier releases from King Princess and Jaco Rosa.
Two new volumes, one release date
Word broke in July that the Neil Young tribute project wouldn't stop at one sequel — it's getting two: Heart Of Gold, Vol. 2 - Out Of The Blue and Vol. 3 - Into The Black. Both are scheduled to arrive simultaneously on November 6, following up on last year's Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Volume I.
The titles are drawn from a lyric in Young's own "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)" — "out of the blue and into the black" — with the two volumes apparently splitting the tracklist along that thematic line.
What's been shared so far
Ahead of the Modest Mouse and My Morning Jacket covers, the project had already unveiled King Princess's take on "Helpless" and Jaco Rosa's version of "After The Gold Rush" — both drawn from Young's landmark early-1970s catalog.
