Meta Pulls Muse AI Image Tool After CAA, UTA Protest Over Artist Likeness Rights

Meta's AI image generation tool Muse Image launched on July 7, 2026, letting users generate images from public Instagram account content. All public accounts belonging to users 18 and older were automatically opted in. Less than a week after launch, CAA, UTA and SAG-AFTRA issued strong objections over the unauthorized use of artists' likenesses, and Meta pulled the feature.

A CAA spokesperson told Deadline that artists must be able to set usage limits, monitor how their likeness is used, and prevent unauthorized endorsements or exploitation, adding that "responsible AI requires clear disclosure mechanisms and the ability to quickly remove unauthorized content."

UTA criticized the opt-in-by-default setup in a statement to the Los Angeles Times, calling it "exploitation, not innovation" to use such property without consent, credit, or compensation. SAG-AFTRA's statement described the mechanism as "unacceptable," saying that anything short of a clear, conspicuous opt-in system represents a serious misjudgment of public concern.

Taylor Swift, Backstreet Boys and Lionel Richie had already taken steps to protect themselves from deepfake content before this controversy broke.

Meta's response and what's next

Meta said Muse Image was the first media-generation feature from its Meta Superintelligence Labs, intended to let users decide for themselves whether their public content could be referenced. The company said it had heard feedback that the feature "fell short of expectations" and pulled it.

The controversy's trajectory echoes the backlash and eventual abandonment of OpenAI's video generation tool Sora 2. After Muse Image was pulled, the broader Muse platform will continue operating, with invisible watermarks added to distinguish AI-generated content from real images.
