Trashcan Sinatras Guitarist John Douglas Dies at 62
John Douglas, guitarist and a core backing vocalist for Scottish indie band Trashcan Sinatras, died on August 4, 2026, following a short illness. He was 62. According to Far Out Magazine, news of his death spread around the time of another musician's funeral in Dublin. Douglas, born in 1963, spent 40 years in the band, playing guitar, anchoring its harmonies, and occasionally singing lead.
From Cake to I've Seen Everything
Trashcan Sinatras' 1990 debut album Cake arrived amid the crosscurrents of Madchester, acid house and shoegaze, peaking at only No. 55 on the UK albums chart. Still, singles "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell" found an audience on American college radio.
The 1993 follow-up I've Seen Everything kept the band's signature dense chord changes and tight harmonies, but landed between the grunge and Britpop waves and never broke through commercially. Neither album turned a profit, and the band ended up living in the Kilmarnock studio they'd bought with an advance from Go! Discs — a place they nicknamed "Shabby Road."
In a 2024 Radio Nova documentary about the band, Douglas described that period as simply "industrious": once the chemistry clicked, they made music around the clock, from waking up to going to sleep.
A tribute from Frank Reader
Frontman Frank Reader, who is also related to Douglas by marriage, posted a tribute recalling a story from around 1992, while the pair were making the second album in Kilmarnock. After breakfast one day, they found a charity-shop T-shirt that altered the Guinness logo to read "Genius." Reader felt he couldn't pull off the joke, so Douglas bought it instead and wore it for years afterward.
Reader wrote that what made Douglas compelling as a creative force was that he wielded his ability without boasting or ego, and that he always reminded bandmates not to let self-doubt get in the way — self-doubt, in his telling, was just humility wearing a shabby T-shirt.
Understated jangle-pop craft
Douglas's guitar playing has been described as being in the lineage of Johnny Marr — precise, clean, never showy. Unlike Marr, he also carried the band's vocal-harmony work, building, with Reader, some of the most distinctive choral passages in indie pop. From its name onward, Trashcan Sinatras kept a deliberate distance from the "cool" image of contemporary guitar bands, which is part of why they long remained on the margins of the mainstream.
