UK Survey: 41% of Adults Haven't Listened to a Full Album in a Year

According to NME, UK rail operator National Rail commissioned a survey of 2,000 UK adults on their music listening habits. The results: 41% of respondents hadn't listened to an album all the way through in the past year, and 8% admitted they'd never completed a full album at all. The same survey found listeners replay their favorite songs an average of 343 times a year — a number that says a lot about the structural pressure streaming has put on the album format.
The listening-habit data
Respondents gave several reasons for their repeat-listening tendencies: 65% said "I just like these songs," while 50% cited nostalgia and 50% cited comfort.
Against that backdrop, National Rail launched a campaign called Track Reset, working with DJ Adriano Desire and music psychologist Dr Ruth Herbert to produce a specially made three-minute track designed to "reset" listening habits and make audiences more open to discovering new music.
National Album Day 2026 and industry reaction
National Album Day was founded in 2018 to champion the album as an art form, with a different artist named Album Champion each year. The 2026 edition is set for Saturday, October 17, with PinkPantheress among this year's Album Champions.
In a statement, she said everyone's relationship with music differs — she both revisits old albums and keeps exploring new sounds — and encouraged listeners to do the same on National Album Day.
NME published its list of the best albums of the first half of 2026 last month, with BTS, Kneecap, and Olivia Rodrigo all making the cut.
