Sublime's "What I Got" and Its Beatles Bloodline

British music outlet Far Out Magazine published a piece on August 27 re-examining the relationship between ska-punk band Sublime's 1996 single "What I Got" and The Beatles' 1968 single "Lady Madonna." The article argues the two songs overlap almost note-for-note in structure and melodic direction — yet arrived at their audiences by opposite routes.

Where the songs overlap

Far Out's case centers on the arrangement's skeleton. Where The Beatles' "Lady Madonna" looked back to the roots of classic rock and roll, Sublime is said to lean on the same underlying pattern while swapping in everyday scenes — waking up in the morning, cigarettes, a spotted dog. The piece describes the result as a song caught between eras: no longer purely representative of old-school rock, but not yet speaking a fully new musical language either.

The article also notes that Sublime's Beatles worship wasn't unusual for its moment — plenty of American bands in the 1990s were working from the same reference points.

A hit built by college radio

Commercially, the two songs tell very different stories. "What I Got" peaked at only No. 29 on the Billboard Airplay chart, well below "Lady Madonna," which topped the UK chart and reached No. 4 in the US on release. Far Out attributes "What I Got"'s slow climb to college radio, which built Sublime's core audience from the ground up — a distribution path typical of underground bands in the 1990s and one that makes the song a classic sleeper hit.

Thirty years on, and a final album

Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996; roughly half of the band's total output was released after his death. This year marks the 30th anniversary, and in June Sublime released what's billed as its final album, Until the Sun Explodes, with Nowell's son Jakob Nowell on vocals.
