O2 Academy Sheffield Confirms February 2027 Reopening
The O2 Academy Sheffield will reopen in February 2027, ending a closure that began in 2023, according to NME. The announcement came this week via the venue's own social accounts, which described the return as "hoisting up the mirror ball once again." The building first opened in 1968 and had long been a stop missing from the UK touring circuit during its closure.
What the renovation covers
The rebuild has been funded by Academy Music Group (AMG), which operates the venue. Work includes a full roof replacement, new air conditioning, and major backstage upgrades across both the main hall and the smaller O2 Academy2 room. On the audio side, AMG partnered with Adlib to install a new L-Acoustics K3 speaker system.
AMG CEO Liam Boylan said AMG is the backbone of the UK touring circuit and that Sheffield is a key regional venue — one promoters and artists couldn't route through while it was closed. Adlib managing director John Hughes said he was glad to work with the AMG team. AMG venue manager Justin Smith, who has worked at the site for nearly two decades since its opening night, said the new L-Acoustics rig can adapt to different genres and event types, giving returning artists better technical resources.
From Top Rank Suite to O2 Academy
The building opened in 1968 as the Top Rank Suite and hosted shows by The Police, The Clash, Joy Division and David Bowie. It later became the dance venue Roxy Disco, one of the region's biggest nightclubs through the 80s and 90s, before closing in the late 90s. AMG acquired the site, renovated it extensively, and reopened it in 2008. Since then it has hosted Elbow, The Prodigy, Kasabian, Self Esteem, The Streets, Bring Me The Horizon, The Killers, Wolf Alice, Stormzy, Milburn and The Black Keys.

O2 Academy Sheffield is only one of several Sheffield venues affected by closures in recent years. The Leadmill, which ran for 45 years, shut down in June 2025 after its former operators were denied the chance to appeal an eviction notice and given three months to vacate. The site has since been taken over by Electric Group, which also runs Brixton Electric, and will be redeveloped into a new venue called Electric Studios. The Leadmill previously hosted Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, Bring Me The Horizon and Self Esteem, along with shows by Muse, Coldplay, The Strokes and Oasis.
