Miguel Speaks Out Against Racist Attacks Targeting His Family

Grammy-winning R&B artist Miguel posted a statement to Instagram on Friday, August 28, 2026, saying he, his partner Margaret Zhang, and their child have been subjected to ongoing racism, harassment, stalking, privacy violations, and false accusations. He singled out anti-Asian attacks aimed at Zhang — both in public comments and direct messages — as well as abusive language directed at their child. According to NME, this marks the first time Miguel has spoken publicly about the situation.

What Miguel Said

In the statement, Miguel wrote that people are free to have opinions about him, his music, and his work — he accepts that as part of a public career. But he drew a firm line: racism, threats, harassment, stalking, invasions of privacy, and targeting children are "abuse," not opinion.

He added that none of it becomes acceptable when dressed up as criticism, fandom, speculation, or "concern." The statement also pointed to third parties who knowingly amplify the problem — writing that organizations and individuals who boost or tolerate racist content, harassment, and false claims for clicks and engagement share responsibility for it.

Miguel said people who take part in this behavior are not supporting him and are not part of his community. He stated that action has already begun, and will continue, wherever legal and ethical lines have been crossed — without specifying what legal steps, if any, are being pursued.

Recent Work: Caos

The statement comes roughly a year after Miguel released Caos, his first album in eight years, following 2017's War & Leisure. He has described Caos as opening with a Spanish-language monologue before unfolding into an experimental meditation on rebirth.

Discussing the album's origins, Miguel said he had to destroy himself in order to rebuild, describing transformation itself as violent — with Caos translating that violence into a sound that could be shared and understood. He has also spoken about "Sure Thing," his older track that found a second life on TikTok, saying he always felt the song had something special about it.
