Crowd Crush Halts Set at Electric Picnic; Promoter Melvin Benn Responds
Ireland's Electric Picnic festival returned to Stradbally Hall in County Laois from Friday, August 28 to Sunday, August 30, 2026, with the sold-out weekend drawing roughly 80,000 attendees. Headliners across the three days were Lewis Capaldi, Gorillaz and Fontaines D.C. On Friday night, a crowd crush at the Smirnoff stage forced the cancellation of a set by Armand Van Helden. Festival Republic managing director Melvin Benn addressed the incident — and a separate capacity issue the following night — at a press conference on August 30, as reported by NME.

Friday's crush and the Van Helden cancellation
The incident occurred as crowds converged on the Smirnoff stage ahead of Van Helden's scheduled 90-minute set, with people trying to enter colliding against others trying to leave, creating a bottleneck. One attendee told The Journal it felt "like a silent bomb blast," while another attendee, Aoife McKenna, described "total mayhem," with people suddenly piling on top of each other as crowds outside the area kept pushing in. Van Helden was stopped from taking the stage before his set began; nearby bars were closed, and organizers used announcements and screens to urge the crowd to disperse. Van Helden later posted on Facebook saying he was upset about the cancellation but that the health and safety of everyone present always comes first.

Benn, who also runs Reading & Leeds, Latitude and The Great Escape, initially pushed back when asked whether Electric Picnic needed to improve crowd management, saying "I don't think it could have gone better" and calling the idea of changes over Saturday's capacity issue "bonkers." After McKenna's account was relayed to him, Benn said organizers acted as soon as the crush situation became clear, that medical staff and security were on site, and confirmed Van Helden had been stopped from performing. He said no other stage saw a crowd crush over the weekend, and when asked whether large dance acts should be scheduled on bigger stages, he maintained that Electric Picnic handled crowds well overall.
Saturday's capacity issue and heavy rain
A second capacity issue occurred on Saturday during Duke Dumont's set at the Electric Arena. Staff and Irish police (gardaí) tried to limit how many people could approach the tent, and organizers sent multiple alerts via the official app as crowds outside reportedly queued several rows deep. Unlike Van Helden's set, Duke Dumont's performance went ahead as scheduled while staff redirected attendees who couldn't get in. A Journal reporter on site described the area as crowded but not unsafe, and Benn said the crowd was cooperative with no major issues. Before the crowd problems, sustained heavy rain had already affected the Stradbally site: the Coca-Cola tent was cleared on Friday after water seeped into the structure, with security clearing the area during the process. Rain also caused flooding in the campsites and site walkways, and organizers later laid wood chips in some areas to improve ground access.
