KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Confirmed for Theatrical Release Before Streaming

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed at an industry event on the evening of Wednesday, September 30, that the sequel to the animated hit KPop Demon Hunters will get a "very broad theatrical release" before landing on streaming. It's part of a broader shift in how Netflix handles its biggest titles, according to The Wrap. The original film has racked up more than 325 million streams since launching on Netflix in June 2025, and previously had limited theatrical screenings around the world.

Why Netflix is rethinking theatrical

Sarandos framed the move as a way to serve fans who want to see a film in theaters without undercutting Netflix's own value proposition. He noted that strong box-office performance doesn't always translate to strong streaming numbers, since "the most passionate audience has already seen it in theaters" — leaving streaming viewership to the more lukewarm "I meant to watch it" crowd. He also suggested the 2025 period drama Train Dreams would have benefited from a theatrical run as an art-house title.

The same approach is already rolling out across Netflix's slate. Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's La Bola Negra will get a full 45-day theatrical run in November. That same month, David Fincher's The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth — a follow-up to Quentin Tarantino's 2019 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood — becomes the first Netflix film to screen in IMAX. Greta Gerwig's Narnia and a new animated Charlie And The Chocolate Factory are both also confirmed for theaters next year.

What we know about the sequel so far

The KPop Demon Hunters sequel was confirmed in development last November. No release date has been announced, and industry observers don't expect it to be ready before 2030. Plot details remain unconfirmed. Sony executive Damien de Froberville said earlier this year that the film's world is "so rich" — pointing to the demon world, the K-pop star setup, and where the character Jinu goes next as areas still ripe for expansion.

A live-action spinoff looks unlikely

Despite persistent fan speculation, creator Maggie Kang has said a live-action adaptation is unlikely. She's pointed out that the film's tone and comedic sensibility depend heavily on the animated format, saying it's "hard to imagine" the characters working in a live-action world — the realism would feel wrong for the story.
