Green Day's 1991 European Debut Tour: A Pickled Head Named "Sleepy" in Copenhagen
In late October 1991, Green Day were partway through their first-ever European tour when a gig at the underground Copenhagen venue Ungdomshuset led to an overnight stay they never forgot. Broke and unable to afford a hotel, the band crashed at a local sound engineer's apartment — and came face to face with a human head preserved in formaldehyde. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong first told the story in a 2004 interview with Dutch channel TMF; it recently resurfaced via a Far Out Magazine roundup.
A broke band on the road with "39/Smooth"
In 1991, Green Day had only their debut album, 39/Smooth, to their name — years before Dookie pushed them into MTV's mainstream, let alone American Idiot. The trio scraped together just enough money for their first European run, kicking off in Germany on October 20 and reaching Copenhagen eleven days later.
The venue, Ungdomshuset, sits in Copenhagen's historic Nørrebro district and had been a hub for left-wing and anarchist movements since the 1890s, with past acts including Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, and KUKL, the band a young Björk once played in. That night, the crowd greeted the band with the local custom of spraying beer over acts they liked, and the show reportedly saw some chaotic scenes — including audience members having sex in plain view — though the set itself went off without major incident.
Enter "Sleepy"
After the show, the penniless trio accepted the venue's sound engineer's offer of a place to crash and settled into sleeping bags at his apartment. Before they turned in, their host told them they were about to meet a roommate.
Armstrong later recounted: "All of a sudden he wheels in this vat with formaldehyde in it, and there's a head in it. He's like, this is my friend, Sleepy." By his description, Sleepy was a bald head with pins stuck through the face and scalp, reportedly lifted from a school biology classroom and kept by the host as a conversation piece to spring on unsuspecting guests.
Armstrong fled to sleep in the hallway. Bassist Mike Dirnt, however, stayed put and spent the whole night next to Sleepy. In a 2001 interview with MuchMusic, he recalled greeting his headless companion the next morning: "Good morning, sunshine. You're looking good today — must be the formaldehyde."
