Australia Gets Its First Industry-Led Festival Guide: Festival Blueprint
The Australian Festival Association (AFA) launched Festival Blueprint on August 10, 2026 — the first best-practice guide for music festivals written and led by the industry itself in Australia. Funded by the New South Wales (NSW) state government through its music office Sound NSW, the guide is free to access and is designed as a continually updated "living resource," offering organizers operational guidance, regulatory information, and industry experience. It is intended for music festival suppliers, organizers, contractors, agents, and other stakeholders within NSW.
Scope and Contributors
Festival Blueprint was written with input from more than 70 industry professionals, focusing on event planning, risk management, and regulatory compliance. Key chapters cover:
- Accessibility
- Crowd management
- First Nations engagement
- Police engagement
- Regulations related to NSW's Music Festivals Act
Other chapters address medical and harm reduction, emergency response, environmental impact, and ethics and access.
AFA Chair and Fuzzy Operations CEO Adelle Robinson said the guide consolidates the festival industry's collective knowledge to help organizers of all sizes run safe, well-run events. Sound NSW's Emily Collins called it a major milestone for the NSW festival industry.
Timing and the State of Australian Festivals
The guide's release coincides with the festival season lineup announcement period, with Spilt Milk, Beyond The Valley, Wildlands, and CMC Rocks rolling out new lineup details.
Separately, a study released last month pointed to a marked regional touring gap in Australia: in some states, per-capita international touring dates are just one-fifth of those in neighboring east coast states.
