Fenix Flexin Denies Using AI on "Rubberz" — But Doubts Persist

Los Angeles rapper Fenix Flexin is pushing back against claims that his single "Rubberz" was made using generative AI. Released in June 2026, the track climbed to No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 — right as listeners and industry figures began questioning whether it was actually AI-generated.

What sparked the doubts

A big part of the suspicion centers on the odd English accent Fenix Flexin uses on "Rubberz," which some listeners compared to former The Smiths frontman Morrissey. Responding to critics, he said "the only difference is auto-tune, reverb, and I used a fake British accent," insisting his recording process was no different from past work.

But producer Medasin laid out a detailed rebuttal. He pointed out that an unfinished snippet Fenix Flexin had shared earlier contained an audio file name including the word "Sonauto" — the name of an AI music generation tool that, coincidentally, rebranded as Treblo just two days before "Rubberz" officially dropped. Medasin also flagged specific sonic tells: "the hi-hats have a certain crispness, the chorus vocals sound like a low-bitrate MP3, and the reverb tails cut off abruptly."

Fenix Flexin later posted a video showing him breaking the track down track-by-track in Pro Tools, apparently to counter the claims — but the video was subsequently deleted, doing little to settle the dispute.

Part of a bigger AI moment in music

The controversy lands amid a broader wave of AI tools entering music production. Artists including Charlie Puth and Boy George have recently voiced positive views on AI, while Empire of the Sun member Luke Steele recently admitted to using AI himself, comparing it to "a very smart guitar pedal."

Whether "Rubberz" actually used AI remains unconfirmed, and Fenix Flexin's camp has not offered further public comment. According to Far Out Magazine, the controversy is still ongoing.
