Ed O'Brien Explains Why Radiohead Cap Tours at 20 Shows a Year: "These Songs Are Too Powerful"

Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien sat down with the Los Angeles Times to explain why the band caps its touring at 20 shows per year, and to discuss the band's growing appeal among younger listeners. In 2025, Radiohead wrapped its first tour together since 2018, playing 20 arena shows across five cities in the UK and Europe, including four consecutive nights at London's O2 — a run that broke the O2's single-show box office record previously held by Metallica since 2017.

The logic behind the 20-show limit

O'Brien revealed back in March that Radiohead plans to tour a different continent each year starting in 2027, playing 20 shows — "no more, no less." In the new interview, he added that the number still has some flexibility and asked fans to "hold a little skepticism," while maintaining "it probably won't be more than 20."

He explained the core reasoning behind the cap: "These songs are too powerful. Last year's shows were so emotionally intense that you were completely wiped out by the end." O'Brien said adding more dates would mean compromising the level of commitment poured into each performance — "and we're not willing to do that." He also admitted: "We're not young men anymore."

Biggest streaming audience: ages 16 to 24

On the topic of younger fans, O'Brien said Radiohead's "biggest streaming demographic is 16 to 24," a trend clearly visible in the data. He described the emotional exchange at live shows as a two-way current: "They're pouring emotion onto us, and we're pouring it back onto them — that's exactly why the number of shows can't just keep growing."

As for new album plans, O'Brien told NME earlier this spring that Radiohead hasn't even discussed another record yet. On his own front, his latest solo album, Blue Morpho, is out now alongside the single "Abbeycwmhir"; his solo UK and European tour begins in October.
