Death From Above 1979 Announce New Album 'Private Lives,' First LP in Six Years
Canadian rock duo Death From Above 1979 have announced their new album, Private Lives, due January 29 via Last Gang/MNRK — the label they originally released music with. It's their first studio album since 2021's Is 4 Lovers. The title track dropped September 29, with a video directed by Eva Michon starring actor Kim Bodnia. The 10-track record includes a collaboration with CSS on "Mystery." The band also announced a North American tour starting February 2027.
From anniversary shows back to the basement
According to NME, the album was written after Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler spent recent years playing anniversary shows — including a 20th-anniversary tour for their debut You're a Woman, I'm a Machine and shows marking 10 years of The Physical World. Keeler said playing old songs every night "really makes you want to make new things."
Grainger said that after the anniversary run, the pair felt somewhat tired of constantly celebrating themselves, while also being pulled back toward the band's core sound. Much of the new album draws on old, unreleased demos the two had privately kept over the years, now dug up and finished.
On their process, Grainger noted that in the band's early days, making music simply meant going down to the basement — an extension of living together and being enmeshed in each other's lives — and that the process has become more deliberate with age. He described the band as always striking a balance between sweet and sour, heavy yet gentle and playful.
Lead single "Private Lives"
The title track centers on seeking privacy in an era of overexposure. The pair said people are often pushed to share their most private moments and quietest thoughts, which mostly end up feeding a cheap feedback loop of consumption. They added that at the end of the day, it's simply a "ripping rock song" with a nearly manic riff. The band described the 10-track album as a renewed commitment to "the pure industrial magic of electricity."

2027 North American tour dates
The tour kicks off February 2, 2027 in Tempe, Arizona, running through the U.S. West Coast and Ontario and Quebec in Canada, before wrapping March 5 in Brooklyn.
