Dan Schneider Loses Appeal in Defamation Suit Over Quiet on Set Documentary

Former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider's defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery over the documentary series Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has been thrown out. On September 10, a three-judge panel at California's Second District Court of Appeal unanimously sided with the defendants, reversing an earlier ruling and effectively ending Schneider's case. Schneider had argued the series implied he sexually abused child actors who worked on shows he created. According to Far Out Magazine, the appeal was brought by Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony, and producers Mary Robertson and Emma Schwartz.

Why the court sided against Schneider

Presiding judge Melanie Ochoa wrote that the documentary "clearly distinguished" between behavior attributed to Schneider by interviewees — sexism, harassment, a toxic workplace culture, and inappropriate sexual jokes — and allegations of child sexual abuse made explicitly against three named individuals elsewhere in the series.

The ruling also noted that the documentary itself states Schneider's employer investigated his conduct at the time, confirming some misconduct but finding no evidence of child sexual abuse. Ochoa concluded that Schneider's attempt to read an alternative meaning into the series' plainly stated content was "unavailing."

How the case unfolded

Schneider filed the defamation suit in 2024 and initially had the upper hand: a judge denied the defendants' motion to dismiss the case. The defendants then appealed — and won.

In his original complaint, Schneider called the documentary's portrayal of him a "hit job," arguing that two child abusers did work on Nickelodeon shows, but that he had no knowledge of or involvement in their conduct and condemned it once it came to light.

Background

Schneider created and produced a string of hit Nickelodeon shows, including The Amanda Show, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly, and Victorious. Nickelodeon severed ties with him in 2018 amid mounting allegations about his workplace conduct.
