Matador Records has announced via Instagram that Car Seat Headrest will release a 2xLP vinyl edition of Teen of Denial (Joe's Story) next week, timed to around the week of Monday, October 12, 2026 — marking ten years since the original album. This isn't a straight reissue: frontman Will Toledo has rewritten the album as a narrative version built around the character "Joe."

What's changed

According to Matador, the band returned to the studio with original producer Steve Fisk to adjust lyrics, rework arrangements, and record new material in the same "Denial-style" sound, including the tracks "Optimistic Son" and the hymn-like "Joe Drives Again." The label describes the result as keeping the original's murky textures and youthful cynicism while adding a sense of hard-won understanding.

Who is "Joe"?

On the original album, Toledo frequently appeared under the alias "Joe," a nod to Daniel Johnston. Revisiting the songs ahead of the album's tenth anniversary, Toledo decided to give Joe a dedicated backstory and restructured the record around it, turning it into a more cohesive narrative work.
