The Insect Musicians: documenting Japan's mushikiki tradition
Directed by Nick Dwyer, The Insect Musicians focuses on Japan's centuries-old mushikiki (insect-listening) tradition, tracing how insect song has long shaped the country's soundscapes and collective listening culture.
The film was conceived from the start as a sound experience meant to be shared in a physical space, and the Kyoto screening will take place inside a guest house at Ohara Sanso. Dwyer has described the Kyoto showing as a special preview ahead of the full presentation at Wonderfruit's December festival in Thailand.
Wonderfruit's wider curation
Wonderfruit has built its reputation in Chonburi, Thailand, around a curatorial mix of music, art, craft and sustainability themes rather than a conventional festival lineup. Chapters is the brand's extension beyond Thailand, with this Kyoto edition offering a preview of the December main festival.
