Tresor.West to Close at Year's End, Ending a Seven-Year Run in Dortmund

Dortmund electronic music club Tresor.West has announced via its official Instagram that it will close by the end of this year. The venue opened in late 2019 and has run for nearly seven years, building a loyal following in the industrial Ruhr region city of Dortmund. The team described the period as a community built around a shared imagination of space and sound, and said it still believes in the value of the space itself — it is now looking for a new operator willing to run it as a more stylistically open venue.

Origins of the venue

Tresor.West was launched by Dimitri Hegemann, founder of Berlin's legendary club Tresor. Hegemann, who comes from the Ruhr area, had been developing the idea of taking the Tresor brand westward for nearly two decades. He had once planned to open it in a decommissioned power plant near his hometown of Werl, but the plan fell through due to local political factors.

The project eventually landed at the former Phoenix-West steelworks site in Dortmund's southern Hörde district — a site transformed from heavy industrial heritage. The club occupies the basement level of the Warsteiner Music Hall, operating independently from the venue above. It had a soft opening in November 2019 during the Musik und Maschine forum, and officially opened on December 20, 2019.

Space and sound

Concept-driven nights

Beyond booking, Tresor.West was also known for its concept-driven party format — rather than simply stacking DJ lineups, nights were built around specific themes and live design. The venue established a distinctive club identity, including a code of conduct and awareness standards for how people treat one another, hosting international, national, and local electronic music artists under this framework.

Post-pandemic struggles

Tresor.West's run was not without difficulty. After opening in late 2019, it was forced to close only about three months later due to the pandemic, before eventually reopening. In recent years, the team has repeatedly spoken publicly about operating pressures, citing rising operating costs, declining spending power among guests, and insufficient funding support. It launched the #SaveTheUnderground initiative, using lower-barrier program formats like Community Nights to keep the venue running.

Regarding the reason for closing, the team said a purely techno-focused approach has become unsustainable since the pandemic, with attendance dropping noticeably. As a result, they chose to close at the end of the year and are seeking a new operator with a more stylistically open approach for the space.

Closing note

From a basement in a former steelworks to a fixture of Ruhr region electronic music, Tresor.West's seven years also reflect the structural pressures facing Germany's club industry in recent years.
