Tate McRae Responds to MAGA Speculation: "I Think People Can See What I Stand For"

Tate McRae has responded to online speculation about her political leanings, telling Variety that her support for causes she believes in speaks for itself. The scrutiny followed her collaboration with country singer Morgan Wallen on the single "What I Want," as well as reports linking her romantically to NHL player Jack Hughes.

What sparked the speculation

Wallen has faced ongoing controversy since a 2021 incident involving a racial slur. Hughes plays for the U.S. hockey team that won gold at the Winter Olympics and was later seen meeting President Donald Trump at the White House, an appearance that drew criticism. McRae's association with both men led some fans online to question where she stands politically, with some suggesting MAGA sympathies.

McRae's response

McRae addressed the speculation directly in her interview with Variety: "I'm used to expressing where I stand through the organizations I support and the environment I create on tour." She added, "I think people can see what kind of person I am and what I stand for. I hope fans can see that through where I put my energy."

She pointed to her history of supporting The Trevor Project, a nonprofit focused on suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth, and donating a portion of merchandise proceeds to Global Fund for Women.

Where McRae's career stands now

McRae's most recent album, So Close To What, was released in 2025 and includes the hit singles "Sports Car" and "Revolving Door"; NME gave it a four-star review. She received her first Grammy nomination this year, for Best Dance Pop Recording, and is set to close out Lollapalooza 2026 alongside Charli xcx, Lorde, and The xx. Separately, Zara Larsson recently pushed back publicly against comparisons drawn between herself and McRae.
