Ryuichi Sakamoto Retrospective 'Guanyin, Listening to Time' Comes to Taipei Fine Arts Museum
The Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) has announced a large-scale retrospective titled "Ryuichi Sakamoto | Guanyin, Listening to Time", tracing the late composer's path across electronic music, classical composition, film scoring, opera and sound installation. Sakamoto (1952–2023) worked across these fields; dates and ticketing for the exhibition will be announced via TFAM's official channels.
What's in the show
According to TFAM, the retrospective will focus on lesser-known sides of Sakamoto's practice — particularly his post-2000 work weaving together sound, image, technology and nature. The museum says the exhibition includes results of his long-term collaborations with several artists, among them:

- Carsten Nicolai
- Apichatpong Weerasethakul
- Zakkubalan
From YMO to sound installation
Sakamoto studied piano and composition from childhood before attending Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1978, he co-founded the pioneering electronic group YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) alongside Yukihiro Takahashi (1952–2023) and Haruomi Hosono.
His work afterward never settled into one lane: from electronic and classical music he moved into film scoring and opera, and in his later years increasingly toward sound installation and cross-media work — building a practice that sits as much in contemporary art as in music.
