Mahershala Ali Trained a Year, Wrecked His Knee — Then Marvel Killed 'Blade'

Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has spoken publicly for the first time about Marvel's cancelled Blade reboot, in an interview on GQ's One More Question. Ali was confirmed to play the character back in 2019; after repeated delays, the project was formally shut down in August 2026. He says he trained for a full year — hard enough to injure his knee — and moved his family to Atlanta to be ready to shoot. According to NME, he still doesn't know why the project collapsed.

A year of training, a relocated family, then silence

Ali pushed back on the idea that he was simply holding a slot in his schedule while waiting for production to start. Once the project was underway, he says, he was already working and preparing as if filming were imminent — and then it just didn't happen. He described the waiting period as one delay after another, during which he kept training, including sword work and various martial arts disciplines.

Asked about the reasons behind the cancellation, Ali pointed to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, noting that Feige has called it the biggest failure of his career — a characterization Ali says he agrees with. Looking back at his output since Green Book, Ali said Blade never coming together genuinely affected how his career trajectory played out.

Flying Lotus was set to score the film

The film's music also disappeared along with the project. Last year it was reported that Flying Lotus had been attached to score Blade before production stalled; the film was ultimately cancelled in August 2026, and no further word has emerged on the scoring work.

The August announcement drew a strong backlash from fans online, with widespread criticism directed at Marvel over how an established character's project could unravel so completely.
