How Kansas Wrote 'Carry On Wayward Son' the Night Before the Last Rehearsal
Kansas' signature song, 'Carry On Wayward Son,' almost didn't make the album it's most associated with. According to Far Out Magazine, guitarist and keyboardist Kerry Livgren wrote the track the night before the final day of rehearsals for the band's fourth album, Leftoverture — after the tracklist had already been locked in. The song went on to sell more than 4 million copies, becoming the band's biggest breakthrough.
A band stuck at a crossroads
Before making Leftoverture, Kansas had released three albums: the self-titled debut, Song for America, and Masque. All were well-regarded within prog rock circles, but none produced a song with crossover potential. The mood in the band was tense, and there was a general sense that the new record wouldn't change their fortunes either.
The night before the last rehearsal
In the 2015 documentary Miracles Out of Nowhere, Livgren recalled how the song came together that night: he picked up his guitar, sat down, and the song simply emerged, note by note. He described it as something that "just beams in."
Because the album's tracklist was already set, Livgren hesitated to bring in a new song at the last minute, but he decided to play it for the band anyway. They were immediately convinced — the song kept their established progressive rock vocabulary, while the guitar riff and group vocal harmonies on the chorus had an immediate, catchy hook.
When the band arrived at the studio, the song still wasn't fully finished. They carved out time from the recording sessions allotted for the whole album to polish 'Carry On Wayward Son' into a recordable state.
Drummer Phil Ehart's account
Band drummer Phil Ehart said in the same documentary that the song's timing was extraordinarily fortunate. He described Livgren's growth as a songwriter as itself hard to explain — no one knew where the inspiration came from — and yet Livgren delivered, at the last moment, the band's long-awaited first breakthrough single.
'Carry On Wayward Son' went on to become Kansas' best-selling and most recognizable song, and has remained one of the defining tracks of American progressive rock for decades since.
