Batman Fans Are Smuggling Irn-Bru Onto The Batman Part II's Glasgow Set

Filming on the DC sequel The Batman Part II began August 18 in Glasgow, Scotland, where the city's Bothwell Street has been redressed as Gotham City. Passersby have already caught the Batmobile on camera and shared it online. But the more persistent story from the set is smaller and stranger: local fans keep leaving cans of Irn-Bru, Scotland's best-selling soft drink, lying around in the hope the orange-canned soda sneaks into a shot as an unofficial Easter egg. According to The Sun, it's happened often enough that set security has started checking bins and hot dog carts for the distinctive orange cans.

Why Irn-Bru, specifically

Irn-Bru is made in Scotland and has been the country's top-selling soft drink for more than a century, regularly outselling Coca-Cola and other rivals there. Visiting politicians and public figures have taken to filming themselves trying a can as a kind of unofficial welcome-to-Scotland ritual, which gives some sense of why local fans are so invested in getting it on screen.

The drink's music-world connection

Irn-Bru has dabbled in music before: for a World Cup campaign, the brand released the unofficial Scotland anthem "It Only Takes One Lion," a collaboration with Susan Boyle and Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos, which aired during ad breaks around the tournament.

Sequel cast and release timeline

Robert Pattinson returns as Batman in The Batman Part II, alongside returning cast members Colin Farrell (the Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), and Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth). New additions include Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson as his wife, Gilda.

Pattinson said in January that he wrote a batch of ambient music while filming the previous installment, The Batman, which remains unreleased.
