Interpol Play Surprise 'Iron City' Warm-Up in Madrid, Walkmen Drummer Matt Barrick Fills In for Mad Cool 2026

Interpol played a surprise show at Sala But in Madrid on Thursday, July 9, 2026, publicly billed under the name of their new single, "Iron City." Drummer Sam Fogarino sat out the tour while recovering from surgery, with Matt Barrick of The Walkmen and Muzz filling in. Two days later, on Friday, July 11, the band brought largely the same set to the Orange Stage at Mad Cool Festival 2026.

The Iron City warm-up setlist

Despite the show's name, the band didn't actually play "Iron City" that night. The set leaned heavily on Turn On the Bright Lights and Antics. Per NME's report, the full Sala But setlist ran:

  1. "Untitled"
  2. "No I in Threesome"
  3. "C'mere"
  4. "All the Rage Back Home"
  5. "Rest My Chemistry"
  6. "Wings on Fire"
  7. "Evil"
  8. "The New"
  9. "See Out Loud"
  10. "Obstacle 1"
  11. "NYC"
  12. "Not Even Jail"
  13. "PDA"
  14. "Roland"
  15. "Slow Hands"

Mad Cool Festival 2026 setlist

Compared to the Madrid warm-up, the Mad Cool set made just one swap — "The Rover" in for "Roland" — and dropped "Not Even Jail." Full setlist:

  3. "C'mere"
  4. "All the Rage Back Home"
  5. "Rest My Chemistry"
  6. "Wings on Fire"
  7. "Evil"
  8. "Obstacle 1"
  9. "The New"
  10. "See Out Loud"
  11. "Slow Hands"
  12. "NYC"

New album This Mirror Weighs A Ton, and what's next

"Iron City" is the third advance single from Interpol's ninth album, This Mirror Weighs A Ton, due out August 28, 2026 via Partisan Records. The record is produced by Andrew Wyatt (known for his work with ROSALÍA and Charli XCX) and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Sleater-Kinney, MGMT), with an arrangement bringing in strings, woodwinds, acoustic guitar and experimental sound design.

Singer Paul Banks told NME that "Iron City" is built around "a conversation between a human narrator and an AI that runs everything in the future," while voicing some skepticism toward anxieties about AI replacing art.

Looking ahead, Interpol will appear at All Points East x Outbreak in London on August 23, 2026, supporting Deftones on a bill that also includes IDLES and Amyl & The Sniffers. After a 23-date North American tour, the band will head out on a joint UK and European tour with Bloc Party, including two London dates.
