Geese's Cameron Winter on the Records That Shaped Him: Radiohead's In Rainbows Changed His Life

New York band Geese frontman Cameron Winter laid out his formative listening history in an interview with Far Out Magazine, tracing his tastes from middle school through today. Asked to name the album that most changed the direction of his life, Winter's answer skipped past The Strokes — the band Geese are most often compared to — and landed on Radiohead's In Rainbows.

Geese's current lineup is Cameron Winter, Emily Green, Dominic DiGesu, and Max Bassin.

Winter's listening history, by era

Winter split his influences into two school-age phases, then added four bands he says the whole band still agrees on.

Middle school: classic rock

High school: garage rock

Shared favorites across the band

Winter said the band's individual tastes have diverged quite a bit in recent years, but those four names remain a common thread. He also mentioned that his first-ever show was seeing They Might Be Giants at Brooklyn's Prospect Park, where the band played "Particle Man" — "every other three-year-old lost their mind," he said.

Radiohead and In Rainbows

Pressed on which album most changed the direction of his life, Winter said "the best answer is probably In Rainbows." The 2007 Radiohead record is the only album singled out by name in Geese's list.

The Strokes comparison

Far Out Magazine notes that Geese, hailing from New York, have long been compared by critics to The Strokes — a band notably absent from Winter's list. The piece likens this to Jake Bugg redirecting Bob Dylan comparisons toward Donovan, and to Greta Van Fleet denying Led Zeppelin's influence on their sound.
