Detuning as a studio habit

Detuning has long been central to how Smith shapes The Cure's sound. He told Guitar Player magazine: "I often ignore the tuner, especially when overdubbing keyboards; I'll even change the tape playback speed to detune certain parts." That approach produced the band's signature hazy, ghostly texture — but also made some songs difficult to reproduce precisely live.
