Charli XCX Ambushes Djo's Outside Lands Set with a Surprise Voicemail
Djo (Joe Keery) pulled off an unannounced bit during his Saturday, August 8, 2026 set at Outside Lands in San Francisco: the Charlie Heaton voicemail sample from his 2025 single "Charlie's Garden" was swapped out for a real voicemail from Charli XCX, played on the festival's screen. NME reported that Charli XCX was one of this year's festival headliners.
What happened onstage
"Charlie's Garden" came out in spring 2025. The original track features a voicemail recorded by Keery's "Stranger Things" co-star Charlie Heaton, apologizing for bailing on plans.
At Outside Lands, the PA played a ringtone before the screen cut to a voicemail from Charli XCX instead. In it, she says she had no idea anyone had written a song about her, calls it an honor, and tells Djo to call her back after the show.
Keery had already talked up Charli XCX in a 2024 NME interview, pointing to "Yuck" from Crash as an example of her knack for turning very specific situations into songs, and saying he liked how her records are produced.
Charli XCX's Outside Lands weekend
Charli XCX closed out the festival with a set drawing on her new album Music, Fashion, Film alongside fan favorites from the Brat era. She also popped up during The Strokes' set, joining Julian Casablancas and the band for "Take It Or Leave It."
Earlier this cycle she played a small live set at Maida Vale, and delivered her first full Music, Fashion, Film-era show at Lollapalooza, where she also joined Lorde onstage for "Girl, So Confusing."
