Why Bong, and why it matters
Bong Joon-ho is known for subverting genre conventions, often wrapping social critique in comedic form. He built his reputation in Korea with Memories of Murder, broke box-office records with The Host, entered international co-production with Snowpiercer, and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes plus four Oscars including Best Picture for Parasite.
In the announcement post, Bong said he is looking forward to walking the streets of Taipei. He also noted that the works of directors Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, and Tsai Ming-liang deeply inspired him during his youth and student years, and that he hopes to build connections with fellow Asian filmmakers through this course.
