He traces a shift from early admiration to eventual frustration — a turn he attributes to the genre being "cheapened" by a flood of insincere imitators.

From Admirer to Skeptic

Armstrong has publicly credited Nirvana with reshaping rock's landscape. "Before Nirvana came along, punk bands could never really be famous or make money. Once they showed up, everything changed," he said. Green Day's own early breakthrough, including the success of Dookie, has been linked to the same sense of authenticity grunge pioneered.

But Armstrong later grew distant from the movement as it ballooned into a commercial phenomenon, drawing in bands he felt had nothing genuine to offer. Discussing the origins of the single "Longview," he was blunt about what soured him: "Grunge got cheapened by copycats. I feel like we came from someplace tougher, more energetic — the kind of stuff you'd dance to and go crazy over."

He was careful to clarify that his frustration wasn't with grunge as a genre, but with acts that abandoned authenticity in the chase for commercial success. Green Day deliberately distanced itself from that trend, leaning into a faster, more explosive pop-punk sound that stood in sharp contrast to grunge's heavier, slower feel.

Kurt Cobain and the Bar for Authenticity

Kurt Cobain looms large in Armstrong's account. Cobain, he suggests, never bothered with rock's usual theatrics, choosing instead to translate raw personal feeling directly into music — the quality that pushed punk sensibility into the mainstream and the reason Armstrong connected with grunge in the first place. As that standard got diluted by those who followed, his enthusiasm curdled into the frustration he now describes.
