Gongsheng Music Festival

Gongsheng Music Festival (共生音樂節) is a free, student-organised civic festival held each year around 28 February, Taiwan's 228 Peace Memorial Day. The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday 28 February at Liberty Square (自由廣場) — the vast ceremonial plaza in front of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, one of the most symbolic public spaces in Taipei. It pairs a live-music stage with short talks, a "human library", exhibitions and a human-rights market, using music as a way into Taiwan's memory of the 228 Incident and its democratic transition. The 2026 theme is "legacy / what is left behind" (遺緒).

Alongside the stage there are short talks (高妍, 徐偉群), a "human library" of personal-testimony speakers, and a human-rights market. The festival is largely funded by crowdfunding, so the exact bill can still grow closer to the date.

Entry is free — no ticket needed, just arrive. There's no ballot, no registration and no foreign-payment friction. If you'd like to support the festival, it runs a public crowdfunding campaign each year (linked from its Facebook/Instagram @gongsheng228), but backing it is optional and not required to attend.

Route: From central Taipei, take the MRT to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall station (中正紀念堂, Red Line R08 / Green Line G10). Leave via Exit 5 and Liberty Square is a 2–3 minute walk. From the airport: Taoyuan (TPE) → Taipei Main Station on the Airport MRT (~40 min), then one or two stops on the Red Line.

Staying: Any hotel near Taipei Main Station, Ximen or Dongmen puts you a few MRT minutes from the site. Late February in Taipei is cool and can be rainy — bring a light jacket and a fold-up umbrella.
